As a DM who struggles at keeping track of in game time, it would be handy to have a table listing the amount of time it takes for certain common activites such as:

  • exploring while mapping a certain area of dungeon
  • searching for traps/secret doors
  • disarming a trap
  • listening at doors
  • lighting a torch
  • how long a torch will burn
  • how long a flask of oil in a lantern will burn
  • etc.

Now this is a pretty good concept, and very relevant to the game.  I would second it, but the caveat being: it seems like there are a lot of variables to completing anything really comprehensive in a reasonable time-frame, ie exhaustive tables with a lot of modifiers.  Such as lighting, duress v/level, familiarity with terrain, and so on.  But this basic list seems like a good place to start, with a few modifiers.

I think I must be slacking as a GM cuz all those things take place for me at the speed of story. I never keep track of all the time keeping stuff. When I run my SWSE games for expample the Spaceship arrives in… ohhh a couple of days, and everyone's at full HP. Smile

I'm with you on this one Lass. I never keep track of this stuff. Takes away from the fun in my book. I play the game to have fun, and forget real life for a little while.

I also love playing Saga, sadly I recently just sold all my books.

Yeah,
I know what you mean and it certainly is less important than everybody having a fun time. Still
there are occasions however when it is helpful to have some sense of
passing time, to have an idea of what may be happening away from the
party while the party members fritter away searching for secret doors
every 10 feet. I had a game that was taking place outdoors
and I needed to know the time of day so that I could describe the
position of the sun in the sky and let the party know that there were
only a few more hours of daylight.

Have to agree with Dramaman on this one.  I didn't used to keep very good track of time and things became a bit unbelievable.  Now I keep a close eye on things and believe it or not the players have more fun knowing what year, month, day and hour it is.  Plus they have a great time outfitting their characters with time in mind.

If the first inital screen is a success (which I think it will be!), I would like to see a standard encounters one using the charts from the DMG (as mentioned above by someone else) – with maybe some of the dungeon dressing charts as well on an add-on. These are great to have in front of you when players are exploring a dungeon.

Psionics can have its own 2 page screen for those that need / want it.

How are you guys going to distribute this? PDF download? Print on Demand? Also, how far along is it?

 

Chuck/Dramaman/Lass: My last two campaigns were more or less "Adventure all the time everyday forever!" campaigns, and while it was certainly fun, the players advanced pretty quickly but there wasn't a lot of down time. It wasn't a huge problem for them, since I was pretty lenient on them leveling, but I generally like to require down time, during which the actual leveling happens (training and honing skills due to lessons from their recent experiences), which really ruined verisimilitude for me. In my next game I'm going to run, I'm going to be a lot stricter when it comes to measuring time and when they get down time with which to level.

Yeah I can see that. Im starting to experience a bit of that as well in the Pathfinder game Im in. I play a Wizard and really like to focus on crafting scrolls and researching new spells so when the GM keeps us grinding away I end up feeling a wee bit gimped. That said we often finish an arch or dungeon and he gives our PCs about a month or year or other stuff to sort out shop keeping and other domestic – "Hi Hubby, Im home from raiding the dungeon and look what I brought" sorta stuff.

 

In the past Ive seen a GM whip out a calendar to keep track of time. However he used it more as a prop to keep us on track by knowing we only had X number of days before the enemy horde descended upon us. It was pretty cool as it had these in game holidays marked off for us.

Its going to be from a print on demand company we are using. The artwork is all redone, we are still working on the tables. Infact we have planned to talk about it before we record issue 36

Lass: THAT'S EXACTLY WHY FOR ME, TOO! If you're playing a wizard in D&d20 (as I like to refer to it) YOU NEED DOWN TIME! In a campaign we ran (which was supposed to be a city building adventure, but our "domineering ( i.e. munchkin) friend in the game kinda turned it into a "Adventure all the time forever" campaign) I was a wizard and most of the fun I derived from it was the parts where I got to act out the profane and sorcerous was in which I crafted items.

 

After realizing this I started to give the players I ran down time to do these sorts of things and found they got a lot more enjoyment out of it. Especially the parties wizard.

No idea.

 

I've in the meantime am using the 1E screen from back in the day… I did go out and grab a savage worlds customizable GM screen, and its perfect, I can put what artwork in I want and what charts I want.
